Kato USA, Inc. N GE ES44DC Locomotive CSX Boxcar #5293

The GE Transportation Systems-built ES Evolution Series of locomotives are designed to meet the U.S. EPA's Tier 2 locomotive emissions standards that took effect in 2005. These Evolution Series locomotives feature AC traction motors and are powered by a newly designed GEVO12 12-cylinder engine that produces the same power as the 16-cylinder AC4400CW, but with fewer emissions and greater fuel economy. The locomotives also carry a redesigned air-to-air dual-fan heat exchanger, giving them their distinct oversized radiator, a common spotting feature.

While the AC version has proven to be the overall most popular iteration of the GEVO, several railroads, including BNSF Railway, Canadian National, and CSX, have elected to use the DC versions of these engines. The C4 is a variant of the ES44AC, using an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement with an idler axle in the center of each truck, rather than the all-wheel power of its ES44AC counterparts. This configuration provides the engines with the stability benefits of a six-axle truck while reducing the number of traction motors from 6 to 4.

The N-scale model of the GE ES44DC locomotive features multiple body styles to reflect different as-delivered railroad specifications. It is equipped with a powerful five-pole KATO motor with dual brass flywheels, providing excellent performance. The model also includes a directional headlight, illuminated preprinted number boards, and illuminated ditch lights. It is fitted with a Kato magnetic knuckle coupler, making it DCC compatible with Train Control Systems K1D4 and Digitrax DN163K1C systems.
