The ES Evolution Series of locomotives, designed to meet the U.S. EPA's Tier 2 locomotive emissions standards that took effect in 2005, are built by GE Transportation Systems. These Evolution Series locomotives are equipped with AC traction motors and are powered by a newly designed GEVO12 12-cylinder engine that produces the same power as the 16-cylinder AC4400CW, but with fewer emissions and greater fuel economy. The locomotive also carries a redesigned air-to-air dual-fan heat exchanger, which gives it its distinct oversized radiator - a common spotting feature for these new locomotives.
While the AC version has proven to be the overall most popular iteration of the GEVO, quite a few railroads, including the BNSF Railway, Canadian National, and CSX, have elected to use the DC versions of these engines. The C4 is a variant of the ES44AC, using an A1AA1A wheel arrangement with an idler axle in the center of each truck, as opposed to the all-wheel power of its ES44AC counterparts. This gives the engines the stability benefits of a six-axle truck while reducing the number of traction motors from 6 to 4.
The N-scale model of the GE ES44AC locomotive features multiple body styles to reflect different as-delivered railroad specifications. It is powered by a powerful five-pole KATO motor with dual brass flywheels, providing smooth and efficient operation. The model also includes a directional headlight and illuminated, pre-printed number boards, as well as illuminated ditch lights. Additionally, it is equipped with a Kato magnetic knuckle coupler for easy coupling and uncoupling.
This DCC-ready model is designed for the two-rail system and is compatible with the Train Control Systems K1D4 and Digitrax DN163K1C decoders. Manufactured in Japan in 2028, the model is suitable for both boys and girls, with a grade of C10 (mint/new) and a material of plastic. The locomotive is painted in the Union Pacific railroad's iconic yellow color scheme, reflecting the company's transportation theme.
