Amtrak inherited its passenger cars from other railroads during its beginnings. These old, steam-heated cars were in dire need of upgrades, prompting Amtrak to set out and replace them in 1973 with the purchase of the first Amfleet cars from Budd. This initial batch of 492 cars, known as the Amfleet I, featured a door and vestibule on either end, unlike their single-doored successor. These cars encompassed a few different varieties, primarily coach and dinette variants.

Despite the introduction of their newer counterparts, the Amfleet I cars are still in use by Amtrak, primarily for shorter distance routes. These cars boast smooth rolling prototypical inside bearing trucks, along with Amtrak's most modern and current paint schemes. Additionally, the cars can be illuminated with optional interior lighting LED kits (sold separately).

Amtrak and Amfleet are registered service marks of the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, and the use of these products is officially licensed.
